Susanne Lieu is managing director at New York’s Ruben Companies. In her spare time, she enjoys playing golf. Susanne Lieu’s home of New York City may not elicit thoughts of rolling green golf courses, but there are plenty of hidden gems not too far from the heart of Manhattan.
Here are three enjoyable golf courses located near New York City.
1. Van Cortlandt
This course in North Bronx is easily accessible by NYC public transportation and is the oldest public golf course in the United States. Its nearness to the city doesn’t take away from its serene setting, and the course recently underwent a $1.5 million restoration.
2. Black Course at Bethpage State Park
Only 50 minutes from Midtown, this course is a regular on “world’s best courses lists.” It has hosted two U.S. Opens and is scheduled to host the 2019 PGA Championship. As one of the toughest courses in the world, it is recommended only for expert golfers.
3. Ballyowen at Crystal Springs Resort
Located across state lines in Sussex County, New Jersey, this Scottish style course can be played during a day trip from NYC. Bagpipe players and a clubhouse offering fine Scottish malts complement the course’s pristine condition.
